Background

The project took place at Reading Girls' school, which is a muticultural comprehensive school for girls aged 11 to 18. The original idea for this project came from the girls themselves. Initially I wanted to do something 'fun' using ICT that got the girls interested and motivated at the start of the term that would then lead into the KS3 strategy. I had been running a Computer Club for Girls (CC4G) for a few weeks and some of the girls had suggested that they wanted to make a film so I devised the plan for a short five week course that would enable them to do this.

The aim of the project was to encourage girls at Key Stage 3 to engage in ICT. The project covers 5 hours and can be used as an introduction leading into the KS3 strategy units 7.2 or 8.2 (Communication: Sound and Video), or run as an extra curricular computer club. During the 5 hours, students examined adverts, discussed the impact of the media, storyboarded their ideas, filmed each other, edited the footage and evaluated their work.

This project serves as an introduction to film and digital editing and includes topics such as gender representation, advertising and the media. Although aimed at girls at an all girls school, the project would be equally suitable for mixed groups or all boys.
